Solid Waste Management Plan

In 1997, Peace River Regional District (PRRD) began to implement its Solid Waste management plan. This plan provides PRRD with guidance and direction on waste management issues for the next 20 years. Recycling is a large component of the plan.

Cream-coloured drop-off bins were set up in the urban centres during the first phase of the regional recycling program. By October 1997, there were recycling depots in every major community.

In July 2002, PRRD announced some changes to the type and cost of materials accepted at all regional landfills. Landfill fees for commercially generated (non-residential cardboard) increased from $25/tonne to $75/tonne or $6/cubic metre. This had a major effect on the amount of cardboard diverted to recycling depots.

Community Recycling Depots

Chetwynd

Currently, Chetwynd Recycling Depot provides recycling services to the residents of Chetwynd.

In January 1999, District of Chetwynd banned all cardboard from commercial dumpsters. This provided a strong incentive for recycling and increased support for the recycling depot.

Dawson Creek

DC Recycling and Bottle Depot has been in operation since December, 1995. Over the years, DC Recycling has evolved into a “One Stop Enviro Shop” and in June 1999 had to move to larger premises. Besides accepting all beverage containers for refund and all materials in the regional recycling program including cardboard, DC Recycling is a Paint Care depot and a participant in a pilot project for ink jet and toner cartridge recycling.

Fort St. John

FSJ Bottle Drop/Recycle Centre has offered recycling services to the residents of Fort St. John and area since August 1997. They were able to build on the recycling program of Northern Environmental Action who opened a recycling depot February 1993.

Tumbler Ridge

Tumbler Ridge Icemen Recycling Team Depot opened in October 1997. The program is now run by volunteers from the community at large.

In 1999, the District of Tumbler Ridge began a commercial cardboard pick-up service. The diverted material increased the revenue of the recycling depot, making it less dependent on municipal financial support.
