When summer is here, many of us head outdoors to work on our lawns and gardens. And in order to make lawns more beautiful and gardens more productive, people often turn to pesticides, insecticides and fertilizers. Much of the unused portion of these products becomes household hazardous waste. These wastes, when not properly managed, can create environmental and public health hazards. Fortunately, there are safer, less toxic alternatives for our lawns and gardens that do not create the disposal problems of household hazardous waste. Compost may be used in place of fertilizer. In addition to providing vital nutrients to plants, compost helps to retain moisture, aerate soil, and may even help prevent some plant diseases. For composting details, click here.
