One of summers great traditions is dragging out the old lawnmower, cutting the grass, and throwing away mounds and mounds of clippings. Did you ever stop to think about what happens to those mounds and mounds of grass clippings delivered to the landfill each year? Grass clippings comprise a surprisingly large portion of the waste stream. Yard waste, on average, makes up 15% of all garbage, and during the growing season, grass clippings can account for 50% of yard waste. A simple alternative to bagging clippings and dumping them is called grasscycling. Grasscycling is the natural recycling of grass by leaving the clippings on the lawn when mowing. Grass clippings decompose quickly, releasing nutrients back into the soil, ready to be used over and over again. Grass clippings could compact, or mat, in your compost pile and this matting stops the compost process because the decomposers are not able to climb through.
